Have Something to Say

Hi there,

First post. What it should it be about? Well, I suppose it should be about something generalised, but also something personalised, a blog about Ricky. Well, I think I have the ideal first-post. Perhaps you'll disagree? Let me know.

The topic is about favourite movies. I always find myself in a social setting (okay, not always, but, enough for it to be noticeable, clearly) and a host, or person will pose a question to the group in order to start something up: What is [are] your favourite movie[s]? And round-the-table it goes. Often - and, while we're here, let's touch base with the sexist side of things - in fact, too often the response will be "uh, I don't know". And I have to ask, what, exactly, is that all about? I mean, sure, I can understand it. You've probably seen hundreds, possibly thousands of films in your lifetime. To break it down, or categorise one or two as the select two defined as your 'favourite' is a seemingly daunting task. You don't want to over-credit one film too much, or you may over-look a particular movie in the heat of the moment. Or maybe you're scared of how it will make you look. What will people think of you if 'Catwoman' really was your favourite movie? It could potentially say a lot about a person.

But really, I think most haven't invested the time into deciding what they want to be defined as there favourite movie of all-time. So do it. You know you will be asked this question at least three more times in your life. You have just been asked by reading this blog, indirectly to think about and decide yours now. Think about it, and do it. Decide your defining film. Okay, honestly, it doesn't have to be your absolute favourite film ever, but at least, for the sake of the conversation, have something interesting to have at the ready for next time you hear that question, rather than 'I don't know'. Also, be prepared to back up your selection with reasons. Something better than because 'it's awesome' or 'makes you think'. Go beyond the expectation. I suppose I should go first to really give you an idea of what its all about:

Man on Fire.
Awesome film! Oops! I just did it. No really. It's about love, working hard for something you want, it's well acted, under-rated, and it has a touching love story between man and child. Dakota Fanning is the best child-actor ever, and Denzel is at his normal best. I could go further in, but you'll either have to email me, or perhaps next time we share a coffee, beer or pretzel we can discuss it further.

For now, do some thinking, get back to me, and be ready.

Happy New Year everybody. Hope you enjoyed the first post.

Ricky.
